Sewing new futures: Garo Hills youth begin entrepreneurial journey after tailoring training

Shillong, May 15: Young aspiring entrepreneurs from Garo Hills are ready to embark on their journey of self-employment after successfully completing a course in tailoring.

Michael Thongni was the central figure in training and equipping these youth with a skill to sustain themselves with dignity.

A certificate and startup tools distribution programme was held on May 13 at Meg Farm Hall in Tikrikilla in West Garo Hills to mark their course completion as well as new journey of self-reliance. The training was conducted by Northeast Institute of Professional Studies (NeIPS) and sponsored by NABARD.

The training conclusion event was chaired by Kyrshanbor Jala, with Kitmiller Sangma, DDM of NABARD, as the Chief Guest. Rev. Fr. Joseph Binoy, MD of MMCS, was the Guest of Honour and Lamshai Thongni, Project Head of NeIPS, delivered a special address.

Under the training, NeIPS equipped the local youth with skills for self-employment in tailoring and were awarded certificates and provided with sewing machines to help launch their entrepreneurial journeys.

In his address, Lamshai Thongni congratulated the trainees and encouraged them to pursue their ambitions with confidence. He described the day as the “birthday of a new startup,” marking the beginning of their self-employment journey.

Chief Guest Kitmiller Sangma interacted with the newly certified tailors, listening to their concerns and assuring continued support through various NABARD schemes designed to promote sustainable livelihoods.

Guest of Honour Rev. Fr. Joseph Binoy urged the youth to make the most of the opportunities presented to them. “Don’t sit on a gold mine—use the gold,” he said, referring to the valuable skills and tools they had acquired.
