Shillong, June 21: A tragic incident unfolded in Mawdiangdiang on Wednesday as the lifeless body of a minor girl, believed to be 17-years-old, was discovered in a government-run shelter home. The girl, who had been a victim of sexual abuse, was found dead by suicide on Wednesday morning.

According to sources, at approximately 10 am, the girl’s lifeless body was found hanging from a rope in one of the unoccupied rooms of the shelter home. The young girl had endured the harrowing experience of being sexually abused by her own uncle in November 2022. The case was reported to the Mawngap Police Station, and an investigation is underway.

Subsequently, the body of the minor was transferred to NEIGRIHMS hospital for a thorough post-mortem examination. The police have conducted a magisterial inquest, which determined the cause of death as an “unnatural death.” However, recognizing the gravity of the situation, the police have registered a case to uncover the circumstances that led to the girl’s tragic suicide.

They have also called upon the Department of Social Welfare to provide comprehensive information regarding the events leading up to the girl’s unfortunate death.

The Meghalaya State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (SCPCR) has also taken up the case for investigation.
