Shillong, Sept 9: Mawsynram Congress Legislator Himalaya Shangpliang along with the conglomeration of NGOs under Mawsynram constituency and MDC of Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) Alvin Khyriem Sawkmie on Thursday called on Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma to demand for the Civil Sub-Division status for Mawsynram.

Shangpliang justified the demand for elevating the status of Mawsynram C&RD to Mawsynram civil sub-division asserting that the residents of Mawsynram have to go all the way to the Deputy Commissioner’s office in East Khasi Hills, Shillong, but by upgrading the C&RD Block to a Sub Division will help the people of Mawsynram to seek development more closely and at a faster mode.

The Congress MLA said, “The Chief Minister was very positive in his approach. He said that he will be looking into this aspect though there are many demands for civil sub-divisions across the state such as the demand for Laskein (Jaintia), Patharkhmah (in Ri Bhoi) and demand from other areas as well including Mawsynram.”

Shangpliang further justified that there will be less financial implications if a sub-division is setup in Mawsynram as the infrastructure is already in place which includes important offices of the government. Also, he urged the CM to consider the Weiloi to Balat road where one portion of the road was washed away by landslide. He has taken up on a priority that the Weiloi Balat road be upgraded and strengthened.
