Shillong all set to host international football matches, team India coach inspects JN Stadium

Must read

Shillong, Feb 19: Shillong is gearing up to host two international football matches featuring the Indian senior men’s team next month.

On Tuesday, Indian team Assistant Coach Mahesh Gawali inspected the JN Stadium and the practice ground at North-Eastern Hill University.

The All India Football Federation has announced that a FIFA-friendly match against the Maldives on March 19 and an AFC Asian Cup 2027 qualifier against Bangladesh on March 25 will be held at the JN Stadium in Shillong.

Gawali praised the renovated JN Stadium, calling it “one of the best football grounds” in the country.

He examined the lush green pitch, stands, and changing rooms. Although work is still ongoing to improve the practice ground, Gawali, along with the MFA’s Vice-President Cliff Nongrum, discussed the possibility of installing portable changing rooms.

Gawali remarked that a practice ground with permanent facilities would make Shillong the complete package for international-standard football.

India has been drawn into Group C of the AFC Asian Cup 2027 qualifiers’ final round, alongside Hong Kong, Singapore, and Bangladesh. The teams will play each other twice in a home-and-away round-robin format until March 2026.

The group winners will advance to the Asian Cup tournament proper.
