Shillong, March 22: The Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (PMR) Centre has introduced the North East’s first wheelchair-accessible vehicle in Shillong, aiming to enhance mobility for persons with disabilities.
Dr. Lahunlang M. Sohliya, Director of the PMR Centre, shared the motivation behind this initiative, citing the challenges faced by individuals with mobility limitations. “Many patients struggle to attend appointments or even visit places like churches or meet friends. It affects them physically and mentally, leading to isolation. That’s how this idea came about,” she explained.
The retrofitted Kia Carens can accommodate six individuals, including one wheelchair user. Key features include a two-meter rear ramp for easy access, wheelchair restraints with retractable tie-downs, seat belts for all passengers, and spacious interiors to ensure comfort.

Dr. Sohliya revealed that the project was made possible through a kickstart grant from PRIME Meghalaya and support from Health Minister Dr. Ampareen Lyngdoh. Despite these contributions, personal funds were also used to complete the modifications. She emphasized the vehicle’s role as a pilot project. “If found beneficial, we hope the government recognizes its potential and expands the fleet. Beyond transportation, we want to address accessibility in places like religious institutions, social hubs, and restaurants,” she stated.
Currently, citizens can book the vehicle by calling 708-523-5036. Plans for app-based booking systems are in development as the initiative scales. The introductory fare will remain comparable to standard travel costs to ensure affordability.
Special Guest Rinalin Nongdhar, a wheelchair user from Bethany Society, expressed gratitude: “This is a great step towards accessibility. It’s empowering for people like us. I appreciate Dr. Sohliya and her family for this initiative.”

However, she also highlighted broader accessibility challenges in Shillong, including unsafe roads and the lack of accessible footpaths. “If the government implements accessible footpaths, it would transform our experience,” she added.
Dr. Sohliya and others present underscored the need for government intervention to scale such initiatives. She remarked, “While other states like Delhi and Bangalore have similar vehicles, we can stand out by improving accessibility, especially for tourists with disabilities. This would enhance our image as a welcoming state.”
The event, attended by representatives of various organizations, also featured Chief Guest Rev. Dr. R.R. Cunville and Special Guest Rev. Terence Wanshong, who lauded the initiative.
