Shillong, March 27: Health Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh on Wednesday informed that the National Medical Commission (NMC) will soon visit Meghalaya for conducting its official inspection of the Shillong Medical College.

“If everything goes well with the NMC inspection, then we should be on our way to the full functioning of the medical college,” Lyngdoh told reporters after chairing the governing council meeting of the Shillong Medical College Management Society (SMCMS).

The minister informed that she was happy to be apprised that things are going well within stipulated time.

According to her, the recent problem faced by the department was the taking over of the building from the erstwhile Suraksha Diagnostic Centre (SDC).

“There were few glitches there as they (SDC) had gone to Court and fortunately we are happy that the government has won the case and now we have full authority to take over that administrative block,” Lyngdoh said adding “We have handed over the complex to the contractor on the March 16 and we expect the administrative blocks to be quickly put in position and now with that we have crossed yet another milestone.”

Further, the minister highlighted the steps taken to comply with the requirements for teaching faculty and said, “We recently advertised for the recruitment of professors and that also has gone well, we have had some takers.”

“Like I said we want a ‘Ghar Wapasi’ to happen in the medical fraternity, and we are requesting our sons of the soil who are Meghalayans to come back and contribute to this very important project of the state of Meghalaya,” she appealed.

Stating that a workshop would soon be organized in all the departments to be taught in year one of the medical college, Lyngdoh said, “We are likely now to invite stakeholders to this workshop, who will be beneficial for us in their submissions of suggestions, wherever there are bottlenecks.”

She informed that some professors have joined after following due procedures and a building with 12 units has been hired to house them.

“So, these are the preparations that we are doing and we expect the NMC to be here anytime shortly within the month of April or maybe in the first week of May. So, with all of this preparation going on, we expect that the courses should be advertised sometime by June-July end,” Lyngdoh said.

“People may have queries as to what will be the procedures of application, what will be the prescribed fees, what will be, all of that. We have now formed all the necessary committees and they will be reporting back to me. We will also have a full picture as to what will be the procedure of application, what will be the qualification procedures, and what will be the fee structure. I will have all of this information, likely, by April last,” she added.
