Shillong, Aug 7: The Shillong Municipal Board (SMB) has provided 330 waste management workers with health insurance by enrolling them with Meghalaya Health Insurance Scheme (MHIS) and Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PMJAY).
The enrolment was done during a two-day enrolment camp, organized in collaboration with the Department of Health and Family Welfare, to register workers under MHIS and PMJAY at the Shillong Municipal Board Office Compound, and Marten Waste Processing and Disposal Site, Mawlai, which concluded on Tuesday.
The enrolment camp aimed to provide health insurance coverage to waste management workers, ensuring their well-being and financial security.
During this camp at the SMB office campus, 212 workers were enrolled in the ABHA Card and linking of MHIS with Adhaar card while in Marten site at Mawlai, 118 were enrolled. Workers enrolled include waste sorters, scrap dealers, drivers, lorry attendants, and workers from Common Biomedical Waste Treatment Facility (CBMTC), Sanitary landfill and Fecal Sludge Treatment Plant (FSTP).
The camp underscores the commitment of the state government to make healthcare services accessible to every citizen. Staff members of the Shillong Municipal Board (SMB) and officials from the Health Department were present to ensure proper guidance was given to enrollees on utilizing the MHIS and PMJAY scheme.
The Ayushman Bharat Yojana, also known as the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PMJAY), is a health insurance scheme launched by the Government of India in 2018. Its primary aim is to provide comprehensive health coverage of up to Rs 5 lakh per family per year for secondary and tertiary care hospitalisation to approximately 55 crore beneficiaries from over 12 crore poor and vulnerable families across the country. The scheme’s coverage is also extended to grassroots-level healthcare workers – the ASHA and Anganwadi workers.
In Meghalaya, the total percentage of registration under MHIS Phase V stands at approximately 72.11%, with 1,835,631 total beneficiaries verified and 496,497 total families verified.
