SHILLONG, MAY 3: East Khasi Hills district police chief Rituraj Ravi on Thursday said police will leave no stone unturned to ensure all perpetrators involved in the petrol bomb attacks on police stations and other government properties are brought to justice.
“We are working overtime and we shall leave no stone unturned in ensuring that all perpetrators are brought to justice and that peace prevails,” Ravi said while speaking to journalists here.
“We are fully committed and we are fully determined that such attempts by these miscreants (or) misguided youth shall not be successful,” he added.
At two police stations and an office of the Meghalaya Government Construction Corporation (MGCC) in the state capital were attacked with petrol bombs on Wednesday morning.
As many as seven cases of arson attacks have been reported in the state during the past one month.
These include petrol bomb attack on Mawlai Police Station on April 3, at the escort vehicle of NEEPCO top official at Demthring on April 24 and at the residence of deputy chief minister in-charge Urban Affairs Sniawbhalang Dhar at Nongmynsong on April 26. Two vehicles were also torched at Jowai police reserve on April 30.
No arrest has been made so far.
The SP said FIRs have been registered and investigation is under progress.
“However, in none of the cases any damage or any injury has been reported. Most of the cases, the object that they threw it did not even go off because of that reason, there is no damage to properties or any kind of injury has been reported. However in all these cases whenever it is reported, we have registered the cases and investigation is underway to identify the culprits,” he said.
Ravi further informed that some pieces of broken glasses were also thrown on the roadside near the CRPF camp at Mawlai on Wednesday night. “We have not received any official complaint in that regard but we are enquiring into it,” he said.
Asked, the SP said, “There are two angles to it. One of course is maintenance of law and order, peace, public order and a sense of security and confidence in the minds and hearts of peace loving citizens of the city and of the district. East Khasi Hills police is determined and is committed to ensure that citizens of the city and the district feel a sense of security and there is confidence among them. However, at the same time, certain misguided youths took law into their own hands and have indulged in these kinds of cowardly, dastardly acts in an attempt to create fear psychosis among the general public.”
The SP also said that it is too early to link the incidents of petrol bomb attacks to anybody while responding to a query if the incidents have any connection with the recent arrests of NGO members.
“So all these incidents, it is a matter of ongoing investigation. It is too early to link it to anybody at this juncture. Further all are matters of ongoing investigation, I will not be at liberty to disclose the further details of it but rest assured that the perpetrators of all these incidents shall be brought to book,” he maintained.
Meanwhile, the state police are working on strategies to prevent such incidents from reoccurring.
“Now, to achieve our aim and objective in that regard, we are attempting different ways and different strategies, some of which are still evolving and developing and I will share with you the details of it as and when we put them in action and as and when we roll out these initiatives,” the SP said.
In the meantime, Ravi said that police will continue to remain fully alert.
“And it is because of our preparedness and alertness that none of the attacks of the so-called petrol bombs, there was any damage or injuries have been reported till now,” he stated.
