Shillong, Jan 13: Shillong is set to host not just one but two international football matches at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in March.
Previously, it was reported that the city would host an AFC Asian Cup qualifying match between India and Bangladesh on March 25. However, another match between India and the Maldives is now also expected to take place on March 19 or 20.
This development was confirmed by Meghalaya Football Association (MFA) president Hamletson Dohling, who revealed that the All India Football Federation (AIFF) has sent a proposal for the two matches. According to Dohling, the proposal, submitted by AIFF president Kalyan Chaubey, has already received approval from the Meghalaya Government.
Additionally, Dohling informed that officials from the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) are expected to inspect the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium on January 20. Once the AFC gives its approval, Shillong will officially be confirmed as the venue for both matches.
The news has been like a music to the ears of football enthusiasts in the region, based on social media comments they are eagerly awaiting for this opportunity to witness the first ever international football matches on home turf, further cementing the reputation of Shillong as the ‘major hub’ of Indian Football.
