Shillong, Jan 16: The state government has decided to put on hold the proposed construction of the skywalk from Barik point in the city following an assessment report, which indicated that going ahead with the project will lead to massive traffic congestion.

Informing this, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said, “We have put it (skywalk project) on hold. The reason is because we came across certain assessments that have shown that once we start the work out here there’s going to be massive traffic congestion on this road.”

“Though we have the plan ready, the decision was should we start the work and lead to congestion for the next one year or year and a half or shall we just wait till we are able to find some alternative way in which we move forward. So we decided that in the interest of the public convenience, though this project would have been excellent, starting this skywalk now would lead to a lot of congestion in the city and especially of course towards the police bazaar and that would create havoc. So we have put that on hold,” he added.

On the Wahumkhrah beautification project, the chief minister informed that work for the over Rs 30-40 crore project has already been allotted.
