Shillong, June 9: Fish market at Iewduh wore a deserted look on Friday morning, following the state government’s decision to ban the sale of fresh fish imported from outside for 15 days.
A meeting was held between the fish traders, vendors and members of the Khasi Jaintia Fish Wholesaler and Retailer Association (KJFWRA) to discuss the matter.
The KJFWRA has decided to seek appointment with the Commissioner of Food Safety to seek explanation with regard to the ban of distribution and sale of fresh fish brought from outside the state.
The KJFWRA also demanded the Commissioner of Food Safety to explain when the test was conducted, where it was conducted and who is responsible for bringing fish injected with formalin.
Leader of KJFWRA C Wankhar said that fish that are brought from outside the state are from different parts of India including Assam, Andhra Pradesh and those fish that are imported to Meghalaya are being brought after getting approval from their respective state governments.
Wankhar also expressed concern on the harsh punishment which includes seven years in prison and fine of Rs 10 lakh against those violating the order of the Commissioner of Food Safety.
