Shillong, May 11: Amid the Meghalaya government’s aim to curtail the spread of the virus by extending the lockdown in East Khasi Hills, several daily wage labourers are also in the midst of another crisis, making ends meet.
While Hub News interacted with shop owners on how they are coping up with the extended lockdown, they expressed their problems and concerns.
Rajkumar Sharma a shopkeeper at Polo Market raised a concern about goods not being delivered on time and has witnessed delays during the lockdown.
Sharma also questioned the government for not treating them as frontline workers. “We should be treated as frontline workers. We are dealing with thousands of people every day selling the essential commodities. Our health is also at risk,” said Sharma.
While Pana Das highlighted the issue of having to maintain a price list. Raj said that the District Administration may be issuing a price list but it becomes a problem for them. “The Dist Administration comes and check the rates in the shops but they should go to Paltan Bazar where we buy our goods from and understand the rates better,” said Das.
It is to be mentioned that so far the government has not given any special relief for daily wage labourers. The government had extended total lockdown till May 17,2021.
