Shillong, Sept 25: Members of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) and Save Shillong Sikhs (SSS) from Punjab have expressed dissatisfaction with the government’s proposal to relocate the residents of Them Iew Mawlong in Shillong.
The Sikh delegation from Amritsar, which have arrived in Shillong, met the Chief Secretary DP Wahlang, on Wednesday but the delegation declined to share details with the press regarding their meeting.
Jagmohan Singh, the convener of Save Shillong Sikhs, said that the concerns of the Sikh community in Them Iew Mawlong have drawn attention from across the country. He noted that the residents of Them Iew Mawlong are descendants of Sikhs who settled in the area from Punjab nearly 200 years ago. Singh stressed that any injustice against Sikhs in one place affects the entire Sikh community, and their visit was to show solidarity with the residents.
Regarding the government’s plan to resolve the issue by September 31, Singh mentioned that the Chief Minister of Meghalaya had authorized the Chief Secretary to handle the matter, prompting the delegation’s discussions. He added that the group had not waited for a formal invitation from the government to initiate talks.
