Guwahati, Feb 2: Sikkim celebrated a monumental achievement on World Wetland Day (Feb 2) with the designation of the sacred Khachoedpalri Lake as its first-ever Ramsar Site, recognized as a Wetland of International Importance.

An official of Sikkim forest department said this marks a significant step in the state’s environmental conservation journey and highlights its commitment to preserving biodiversity and cultural heritage.

The Ramsar Convention, an international environmental treaty signed in 1971 under UNESCO, recognizes wetlands for their critical ecological functions and global value. “The inclusion of Khachoedpalri Lake in this prestigious list underscores its ecological significance and cultural prominence” the official said.

Sikkim achieves conservation milestone: Khachoedpalri Lake becomes state's first Ramsar site

Known as the “wish-fulfilling lake,” Khachoedpalri is steeped in folklore and holds deep religious importance for local communities. Surrounded by dense temperate forests and bamboo groves, the lake supports a rich ecosystem while serving as a hub for sustainable ecotourism. The active involvement of local communities has played a pivotal role in maintaining the lake’s ecological balance.

“The Ramsar designation is expected to bring international attention and support for the protection and sustainable management of the lake. It opens avenues for advanced conservation strategies and promotes eco-tourism initiatives that benefit local communities while preserving the lake’s natural and cultural integrity” the official said.

Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang expressed pride in this accomplishment, calling it a “historic step in wetland conservation.” He highlighted how this recognition would strengthen climate action, conservation efforts, and sustainable tourism development in Sikkim.

“This achievement is the result of sustained efforts by the Government of Sikkim, multiple ministries, and environmental organizations like the Khachoedpalri Pokari Sarankshan Samiti. Despite previous unsuccessful attempts to list Sikkim’s lakes under the Ramsar Convention, the state’s relentless conservation efforts have finally paid off” he said.
