Sikkim Avalanche: Search & Rescue operations called off

Gangtok, April 5: Authorities have called off the search and rescue operations in Sikkim after Tuesday’s massive avalanche in which seven tourists lost their lives and 13 others were injured.

The search and rescue operations involving NDRF, Army, Border Roads Organisation and Sikkim police was re-launched on Wednesday to look for any missing person unaccounted for.

However, after no new missing report was received in the last 24 hours, the operation was called off.

The bodies of three victims from Nepal were handed over to their families and taken in a hearse vehicle from STNM Hospital following autopsy on Wednesday. They will be taken till Kakarbhitta on the Indo-Nepal border near Siliguri. After the victims reach Kakarbhitta, they will be handed over to the Nepal government to ensure that they are taken to their residences with all the logistical support needed.

The three victims from Nepal include 2 females – aged 29 years from Rupandi and 22 year old from Chitwan, respectively. The third victim identified as a 32 year old male victim from Chitwan, was also taken in the same hearse vehicle to Indo-Nepal border.
