Sikkim Bye-polls: CAP candidates rejected by RO, party calls it conspiracy

Must read

Gangtok, Oct 28: Two nominations of candidates representing the Citizen Action Party (CAP) of Sikkim were rejected by the Returning Officer (RO) during scrutiny on Monday, which the CAP has termed as a conspiracy.

CAP Sikkim fielded Mahesh Rai from Namchi-Singhithang and Pobin Hang Subba from Soreng-Chakung constituencies for the November bye-polls.

Rai’s candidature was “rejected due to a deficiency in the requisite number of proposers during the scrutiny process” and Subba’s due to “incomplete affidavit” submission.

Condemning the disqualification of its candidates, CAP termed it as a “conspiracy” hatched by the Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM). “This action is an assault on the essence of democracy and once again demonstrates the dictatorial tendencies of the SKM, showing their disregard for democratic values,” a press statement of CAP claimed.

It further accused that the SKM has resorted to “unethical and unconstitutional measures pressuring the Election Commission” to disqualify its candidates fearing defeat in the ensuing bye-polls.

“Our party will never accept such conspiracies. No amount of condemnation is enough for SKM’s dangerous attitude. The CAP-Sikkim is steadfast in its commitment to defend democracy and will stand in alongside the people,” the statement added.

The party further threatened legal action to protect the rights of the people. “It’s the darkest day for democratic Sikkim,” CAP said and urged Sikkimese to stand firm for their democratic rights and expose SKM’s authoritarianism.

Meanwhile, CAP’s meeting with the General Observer, Moneesh Kumar in Namchi was postponed on Monday and the meeting would be held on Tuesday. The party would seek resolution on its candidate’s disqualification.

On the other hand, the nominations of Daniel Rai from SDF and Satish Chandra Rai from SKM contesting for Namchi-Singhithang constituency were accepted. The nominations of Aditya Golay (SKM) and Prem Bahadur Bhandari (SDF) contesting for the Soreng Chakung constituency were also accepted.

The deadline for the withdrawal of candidacy is October 30.
