Sikkim bye-polls: SKM secures both seats uncontested, Sikkim Assembly becomes opposition-less

Must read

Gangtok, Oct 29: In a major political development in Sikkim, the ruling Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) has won both seats in the upcoming by-elections without contest.

This result came after candidates from the main opposition party, the Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF), withdrew from the race. SDF candidates Prem Bahadur Bhandari and Daniel Rai officially withdrew their candidatures on Tuesday from the Soreng-Chakung and Namchi-Singhithang assembly constituencies, respectively, where by-elections were scheduled for November 13.

This withdrawal has cleared the path for SKM candidates Aditya Golay, son of Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang, and Satish Chandra Rai, to claim victory unopposed.

With this uncontested win, the SKM now holds all 32 seats in the Sikkim Legislative Assembly, making the Assembly opposition-free.
