Sikkim: CM Golay reaches Indo Nepal border with plans for cross multi-trade corridor at Chewabhanjyang

Gangtok, June 7: Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Golay on Tuesday reached Chewabhanjyang in Geyzing district at an elevation of 10,299 for an intent of opening multi-trade corridor at Indo-Nepal border.

CM inaugurated the newly constructed forest guest house at the border adjacent to an existing tourism guest house which houses Sikkim Armed Police on Tuesday.

The Chewabhanjyang-Uttarey road which started in 2016 by the State’s roads and bridges department, is the first road connectivity to the Indo Nepal border roughly estimated to be 12-16 kms from Uttarey.

Nepal has also connected with Chewabhanjyang from their end of the border with Pushpalal Mid Hills Highway which connects with East to West Nepal highway dissecting Nepal’s geography to reach as far as Uttarakhand.

Golay asserted that the state government is in consideration for opening a multi trade corridor at Chewabhanjyang. He said tha open border needs to be a commercial border, an integrated border which benefits people from both India and Nepal. Golay further said that there are sectors such as business, education, health, tourism and even cultural exchanges between two countries. He said the state are welcoming health tourism in Sikkim, so that if the people of Eastern Nepal fall sick they an come to Sikkim in an hour’s time.

He also informed about multiple occasions when the trade corridor has been discussed with India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah.

CM further said that he have personally made submission for the trade corridor with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. CM said that he have placed this demand with the Home Minister several times. He said so far they have welcomed the proposal positively. Also, there have been discussions between the Indian and the Nepal government about the possible corridor, hence even Nepal has to agree and grant permission for trade route with India.
