Sikkim empowering both farmers and consumers

Guwahati, July 02: Sikkim is supporting the dairy sector through various initiatives aimed at improving productivity, ensuring fair prices, and fostering sustainable practices.

The Sikkim Milk Union launched the SKEPL Farmers App, named Gwala App which will allow the gwalas to access detailed information about the milk they pour, offering improved transparency regarding its value.

For the consumers, Sikkim Milk Mitra App was launched which will enable the consumers to book Sikkim Milk products through vendors and make online payments. Both apps are now available for use on the Google Play Store.

Both the apps were launched on Monday on the occasion of the 4th Gwala Diwas by The Sikkim Co-operative Milk Producers’ Union Limited in Gangtok to mark the contributions of dairy farmers in the region.

The event was graced by Puran Kumar Gurung, Minister of Agriculture, Animal Husbandry, and Fisheries Development, and Arun Kr. Upreti, Minister of Rural Development and Cooperation.

The program highlighted the significance of the dairy industry in Sikkim, with the government’s commitment to support sustainable agricultural practices and improve productivity.

Dr Sharman Rai, Secretary, of Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services (AH & VS) department spoke on the substantial transformations in dairy farming achieved under the leadership of the Chief Minister, recognising his mission and vision for advancing the dairy industry in the state. He noted how these changes have improved the livelihood of farmers, increased productivity, and promoted sustainable agricultural practices.

Additionally, the Secretary also outlined several key future plans which include making the State a Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) free zone, achieving year-round green fodder production in Sikkim and establishing Sikkim as an A2 milk hub by promoting the indigenous Siri breed of cows.

Mr Puran Kr Gurung emphasised the significance of the dairy industry in Sikkim and reiterated the government’s dedication to supporting and promoting sustainable agricultural practices.

“The Sikkim Co-operative Milk Producers’ Union Limited has done a commendable job in organising this event, bringing together the community to acknowledge and appreciate the hard work and dedication of those who play a crucial role in our agricultural sector,” Gurung said.

He highlighted that the milk consumed daily is a testament to the relentless effort and commitment of its farmers.

He emphasised the importance of sustainable farming practices and the role of the Sikkim Milk Union in supporting the farmers.

Dr. T.B. Ghatani, Managing Director of Sikkim Milk Union highlighted the union’s goal to facilitate milk collection in remote areas and deliver quality milk and milk products to consumers, noting a significant increase in daily milk procurement this year.

Awards were distributed to the top-performing Village Milk Producers Cooperative Societies (MPCS) from various districts, with Namchi District being recognized as the Best Performing District in milk production. Special awards included the Gwala Ratna Award 2023-24, which was conferred upon Jiwan Prasad Sharma for his exceptional milk supply.
