In one such instance, Army carried out a controlled explosion of some of the explosives recovered on Testa River basin on Friday. A video of the same has gone viral online.
Army equipment, including explosives, ammunitions and weapons, were swept away in the early morning flash floods in Sikkim on Wednesday when the South Lhonak Glacial Lake burst. The glacial burst poured about 100 hectares of water into Teesta River, along with swept up trees and rocks, making the river a deadly force of nature that wrecked and swept along everything in its path.
At least two persons were killed and four injured in West Bengal’s Jalpaiguri district on Friday when a mortar shell, reportedly carried by the flood-waters of Teesta River, exploded.
Earlier, a cautionary advisory was issued by the Indian Army to the citizens in the flood-affected regions of Sikkim and Jalpaiguri District in West Bengal. “Due to severe floods in Sikkim certain military equipment including firearms and explosives were carried away in Teesta river. Urgent notice for public has already been issued by Jalpaiguri District Authorities. Army has established lookout teams all along the river downstream,” the Defence PRO in Guwahati had tweeted.
