Extended winter due to wet spell

Gangtok, March 13: Sikkim’s winter season will extend until March 15 due to the ongoing wet spell, with day temperatures expected to rise only after this period.

Thunderstorms, lightning, and light to moderate rainfall will persist, while higher reaches of North and East Sikkim will continue to receive snowfall in the coming days. Cloudy conditions will keep temperatures low, prolonging the cold spell.

“The current wet spell is caused by an anti-cyclonic flow over the Bay of Bengal, which is pushing moisture-laden winds toward the Himalayas,” said Gopinath Raha, Director of the Indian Meteorological Department in Gangtok.

Between January and February, Sikkim recorded a 45% increase in rainfall compared to usual winter levels. North Sikkim saw a 74% rise, leading to increased snowfall activity, which is expected to continue until March 15.

Other districts also experienced higher-than-normal rainfall.

However, the western districts of Soreng and Geyzing received less rainfall than usual.

The lowest temperature recorded in Gangtok this year was 5.5°C on February 16.
