Sikkim’s organic fisheries cluster launched to drive sustainable aquaculture in the Northeast

Must read

Guwahati, Jan 6: Sikkim, celebrated for its leadership in organic farming, adds another milestone to its sustainability journey by integrating organic aquaculture practices.

The Centre has kickstarted an organic fisheries cluster in Soreng, Sikkim under Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) to revolutionize sustainable and eco-friendly fisheries in the region.

This was announced by Union Minister for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying, Rajiv Ranjan Singh, alongside Ministers of State Prof. S.P. Singh Baghel and George Kurian, at the Northeastern Region States Meet 2025 in Guwahati on January 6.

The Organic Fisheries Cluster emphasizes an ecologically sound fish farming system, avoiding harmful chemicals, antibiotics, and pesticides. This approach minimizes environmental pollution, protects aquatic ecosystems, and contributes to sustainable fish production. Organic products, known for commanding premium prices in domestic and international markets, position Sikkim to tap into lucrative export opportunities.

Focusing on species like amur carp and other carp, the cluster is poised to deliver economic, environmental, and social benefits. By aligning organic fish farming with Sikkim’s successful organic agriculture framework, the state could emerge as a global leader in sustainable aquaculture, boosting its economy and supporting eco-friendly food production.

The Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) is a flagship scheme aimed at fostering a Blue Revolution through the sustainable development of fisheries in India.

The National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) plays a pivotal role in the development of the Organic Fisheries Cluster. Beyond providing financial and technical assistance, NABARD will support the formation of fisheries-based Farmer Producer Organizations (FFPOs) and fishers’ cooperatives in Sikkim. The initiative is expected to attract private investment in aquaculture infrastructure and technology, strengthen the fisheries value chain and branding of Sikkim’s cold-water fisheries, boost tourism and empower local fishers and farmers.
