Guwahati, April 16: A senior ophthalmologist in Assam’s Silchar has been booked for allegedly assaulting a 2-year-old child during a medical examination at a private eye hospital. The incident reportedly occurred on Monday evening and has sparked widespread outrage after a video posted by the child’s mother went viral on social media.

Following a formal complaint by the mother, the doctor, identified as Dr. Haimanti Choudhury of Choudhury Eye Clinic, was detained by police and her statement was recorded, according to police sources.
The child’s mother later shared a video online describing the incident in detail. She stated that she had taken her son to the clinic due to an eye problem, and they had managed to get an appointment with Dr. Haimanti Choudhury.

“During the treatment, the lady doctor said that some iron substance has gone into my son’s eye and she started checking it. But at one point, she suddenly started slapping my child in front of me,” the mother alleged in the video.
She further claimed that her son was slapped multiple times during the consultation, and he was hurt so badly that he almost fainted.

The alleged assault led to tensions at the clinic, with the child’s family confronting the hospital staff. Both the sides informed the police and a team from Silchar Sadar Police Station soon arrived at the scene.
Silchar’s Superintendent of Police confirmed that complaints had been received from both parties and cases have been registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS). An investigation is currently underway.

Meanwhile, Dr. H.K. Choudhury, also associated with the clinic, offered a different account of the incident. He said the child was brought to the hospital with a critical issue and it required use of anaesthesia. However, the family members were not sure about using anaesthesia and they insisted on other options.

He also defended Dr. Haimanti’s actions, stating that she was trying a different technique which requires a push to take out the piece of iron stuck in the child’s eye. “She was trying to help the patient but the family misunderstood this and reacted, which is unfortunate,” he further said.
The incident has raised concerns over medical ethics, patient safety, and communication in critical paediatric care, and authorities have assured that the matter is being handled with due seriousness.
