Agartala, July 12: Congress leaders and supporters in Agartala organized a silent protest near Gandhi Ghat as part of the nationwide “maun satyagraha” in response to Rahul Gandhi’s disqualification from the Lok Sabha.
This disqualification came after the Gujarat High Court declined to stay his conviction in a 2019 defamation case related to his “Modi surname” remarks.
Szarita Laitphlang, Congress National Secretary and AICC in-charge of Tripura, expressed, “We are holding a silent protest against the verdict of the Gujarat High Court against Rahul Gandhi. After the successful Bharat Jordo Yatra, Rahul Gandhi delivered a historic speech in Parliament, exposing certain relationships that the current government does not want the people to know about. The people of India are intelligent and understand what we are referring to.”
Laitphlang emphasized that Rahul Gandhi has been a strong and vocal opponent of the Narendra Modi-led BJP government, and he is being targeted as a result. She stated that the nationwide protests convey a clear message that all Congress members stand with him and support his fight for the rights of the people.
Former Tripura Chief Minister and senior Congress leader Samir Ranjan Barman opined that present government in the centre is scared of Rahul Gandhi and through this protest the message is not be scared and move ahead.
He added that since his childhood he was with Congress and for long 24 months he was put behind the bars but he is still with Congress and shall continue to be till his last breath.
Roy Barman said, “People are scared of this regime and they do not dare to open their mouth but it will be a tough task for Modi to come back to power.”
During the protest, participants symbolically tied black ribbons on their mouths to signify the threat to freedom of speech. They held placards featuring Rahul Gandhi’s photograph with the message “Daro Maat” (Don’t be scared).
