Agartala, March 26: Six Bangladeshi nationals were convicted and sentenced to two years of rigorous imprisonment for illegally entering Tripura.

On Tuesday, the Additional Sessions Judge Court of Tripura’s Gomati district announced the judgment.

The six individuals are Soumiya Khatun, Taslim Biswas, Salina Begum, Riman Begum, Abdul Rahim Sheikh, and Aslam Bhuiya.

The Additional Sessions Judge, Udaipur (Gomati district), convicted the six persons and imposed a fine of Rs 20,000 each for committing an offense punishable under Section 14(A) of the Foreigners Act. In case of non-payment of the fine, they will undergo an additional two months of rigorous imprisonment.

“The convicts have also been sentenced to three months of rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs 10,000 each for committing an offense punishable under Section 3 of the IPP Act. In case of non-payment, they will suffer an additional one month of rigorous imprisonment,” a statement said.

Infiltration is a major issue in Tripura as it shares a border with Bangladesh. Bangladeshi nationals often enter India illegally through the porous border.

“To check infiltration and drug smuggling, security forces have been on high alert 24×7, but in most cases, illegal entry happens through other routes,” said a police official.

He added, “However, due to recent joint patrolling by the BSF and Tripura Police, we have apprehended many Bangladeshi nationals illegally entering India and sent them back to Bangladesh.”
