Tura, February 22: A Two Day “Skillerate Connect” was organised by the Meghalaya State Skill Development Society (MSSDS) under the Department of Labour, Employment and Skill Development in the West Garo Hills District at Matchakolgre L P School Playground, New Tura on 22nd February 2024.
Addressing the gathering, Assistant Commissioner, West Garo Hills, Tura Aditya Verma highlighted the importance of skilled individuals, their contribution and their earning capacity adding that a skilled person always has a better choice and earns more than unskilled person. Further, he reiterated that it is the skill development that elevates a person and helps to achieve higher pursuits in their career. He further mentioned that the event also provides a platform for the people to collaborate with employers as well as entrepreneurs and thereby increase the growth of the economy of the State in particular and Nation in general.
Speaking on the occasion, Zonal Sericulture Officer, Sanre G Momin informed that Skills Meghalaya envisioned to implement practical programs for youth development and empowerment with the target of covering the young people under predominance of livelihood and entrepreneurship. She further informed that MSSDS provides funding to the entrepreneurs as well as departments related in skilling and the department of Sericulture had also availed funding from MSSDS for training Eri and Muga farmers of the region. Further, mentioning that the region had many talented individuals with basic ideas but to get good production she said that skills and training is necessary in particular discipline to increase productivity.
While delivering the keynote address, Closterfield Lyngdoh, MSSDS, Shillong highlighted the objectives and functioning of MSSDS since its inception in December 2011 adding that it has been notified as State Nodal Agency for implementing Skills Meghalaya and Sankalp and operates in all the 12 districts of the State. He mentioned that skilling skills is the most important activity and a catalyst for economic development in the entire section of the society and the objective is to empower and train the youth in demand driven sectors available locally for self employment. He also said that the programme intends to cover 1.2 lakhs youth in the coming five years plan under three dimensions namely skilling, livelihood and entrepreneurship.
He further mentioned that the main objective of Skillerate Connect is to accelerate Skilling Connect with Employers, Skilled Beneficiaries, Local Entrepreneurs and connecting Haat Bazaars and making it a platform for self employed entrepreneurship. In the event Employers Meet is also organised to focus on the market-driven skill requirement workforce by inviting State, National and International employers for identification of skilled employment requirements and labour requirements in different industries.
It may be mentioned that the two day programme also includes Job Fair for creating more opportunities for trained youths from all skilling schemes to be absorbed into the job market and Haat Bazaar to facilitate local artisans, entrepreneurs and MSMEs who were skilled through different schemes with the outcome as self employed by giving them a platform to showcase and market their produce.
The Chief Guest of the inaugural function and other dignitaries lighted the ceremonial lamp during the function and also inaugurated the Haat Baazar and inspected the stalls put up by local entrepreneurs, line departments and employers.
Skill Development Officer, West Garo Hills Sabina D Sangma, Skill Development Officer, South West Garo Hills, Tengsilchi Ch Sangma were among others who spoke during the function and Silrikchi Sangma of Sewa Inland Trust shared her success story during the event.
