Shillong, Nov 13: If you are tired of travelling by road from Guwahati to Umiam Lake and tired of winding through the traffic, try hopping on to a seaplane for a different kind of experience.
The day is not far off from when you can go on a seaplane from Guwahati Riverfront to scenic Umiam Lake in Meghalaya.
Spice Jet has been authorised to carry seaplane operations while the aircraft will be from De Havilland Aircraft of Canada.

Union Civil Aviation Rammohan Naidu Kinjarapu will inaugurate demo seaplane operations at Umiam Lake in Ri Bhoi District on November 14. The minister be on a two-day official visit to Meghalaya from November 14-15, to participate in several important aviation and regional development events.
Government of India with the support of the Government of Meghalaya, Pawan Hans Ltd and FICCI is organizing the 6th Edition of Helicopter & Small Aircraft Summit on Thursday, November 14 in Shillong.
The minister will preside over the summit in the august presence of stakeholders from the helicopter and small aircraft industry, including operators, regulators, Financing & Leasing companies, and representatives from different state governments.
“Civil helicopters and small aircraft are crucial components of the transportation infrastructure that contribute to the development of the economy in many ways. The global demand for helicopters, as well as small aircraft, has recorded a new high, which enhances the scope of this industry in a progressive nation like India” a statement from FICCI said.
The District Magistrate of Ri-Bhoi district administration has issued a prohibitory order under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023 on all water-related activities at Umiam Lake on November 14 from 7 am to 1 pm.
“The restrictions apply to boating, fishing, water sports, rides, and other similar activities, as well as the presence of individuals in the lake area during the specified time. This measure aims to prevent any incidents related to the seaplane demonstration scheduled for the same period” the order says.
