Guwahati, June 25: In a tragic incident, an 8-year-old girl child lost her life due to snakebite in Assam’s Darrang district, nearly 50km away from Guwahati city. Locals held a protest rally alleging medical negligence.
According to reports, Princy Saharia, a grade-4 student, was bitten by a snake at her home in Sonapur Dhekipara village on Saturday at 12.30 pm. Following the incident, she was immediately taken to Sipajhar Primary Health Center.
However, after primary treatment, doctors referred her to the district civil hospital in Mangaldai. Due to the unavailability of ambulances at the primary health center, she was taken on a two-wheeler to the district hospital and admitted to ICU. Doctors injected anti-venom medicines, but her situation deteriorated. Later on, she was referred to GMCH and died on the way to Guwahati.
The untimely demise of the girl child has cast a pall of grief in the area. Princy lost her father six years ago in an accident.
Meanwhile, locals today held a protest march in front of the Sipajhar primary health center, alleging medical negligence.
A member of the All Assam Students Union told this reporter that the Assam CM, who recently took charge of the state health department, must take action against the doctor and medical staff on duty for the alleged medical negligence. He also alleged that the girl reached the hospital within half an hour of the snake bite, but doctors did not treat her well, and they did not provide anti-venom medicine, which led to her demise.

Apart from high-level inquiry, locals are also demanding compensation to the family.
Amid the protest, officials of the Darrang district administration and police reached the hospital and assured them to conduct an inquiry into the incident.
In a similar case in October last year, a 5-year-old girl died after being bitten by a snake in the Nalbari district. She was immediately admitted to the newly established Nalbari Medical College and Hospital, but due to alleged medical negligence, her life could not be saved.
Such incidents are a harsh reminder of the shortcomings in rural healthcare.
