Soil and Water Conservation Department Marks World Environment Day at Mandalgre Village

Williamnagar, June 5: The Soil and Water Conservation Department of East Garo Hills joined hands with the global community to commemorate World Environment Day 2023.

The event, held in the picturesque Mandalgre village on 5th June, embraced this year’s theme, “Solutions to Plastic Pollution.”

The esteemed presence of Marcuise N Marak, Minister for Soil and Water Conservation, PHE, Housing, etc., added significance to the occasion as he graced the event as the chief guest.

During his address, Minister Marcuise emphasized the vital role of Sloping Agricultural Technology (SALT) in Mandalgre village, situated within the catchment area of the Simsang River. He urged the villagers to transition away from jhum cultivation and explore alternative livelihoods such as fruit tree plantations. Recognizing the significance of preserving forests and trees, the minister called for the cooperation and support of the villagers in safeguarding the Durama Range to prevent the drying up of rivers and streams.

Joram Beda, Commissioner and Secretary of the Soil and Water Conservation Department, was present as the guest of honor. He shed light on the importance of the Miyawaki afforestation method and stressed that there is still ample time to make corrections and protect the environment by abandoning practices like jhum cultivation. Beda encouraged villagers to adopt innovative agricultural practices and showcase their efforts in preserving the natural environment to the world.

Vibhor Aggarwal, Deputy Commissioner of East Garo Hills, expressed optimism about curbing jhum cultivation if the villagers embraced alternative livelihood options such as fruit tree plantations. He also revealed plans for a large-scale plantation drive organized by the District Rural Development Agency (DRDA) across all villages in the district, with the aim of preserving the catchment areas.

The event commenced with a welcome address delivered by Corbeth Homa D Sangma, Divisional Officer of Soil and Water Conservation, Williamnagar Division. Satyanjalee Koch, Assistant Soil Conservation and Water Officer (ASCWO), extended the vote of thanks, expressing gratitude to all participants.

World Environment Day at Mandalgre Village served as a platform to raise awareness about plastic pollution and promote sustainable practices for the preservation of our natural environment.
