Tura, Feb 2: The Songsak C&RD Block in East Garo Hills observed International Water Conclave by organising a mass cleaning drive of Rongdol Stream near Songsak Bazaar at Songsak Agitokgre VEC on Friday.
The programme was attended by more than 150 participants including VEC members, Sordars, Bazar Committee members, and residents of Songsak Agitokgre.
Rongdol Stream, which flows through Songsak market, caters to the basic needs of almost 200 households, and several villages downstream.
The objective of the programme was to raise ecological awareness and foster collective responsibility for the well-being of water bodies, particularly in the hilly areas. The programme was in compliance to the proposal initiated by Water Resources Department, Government of Meghalaya.
A.G. Momin, MCS, and PD, DRDA attended the programme as Chief Guest and highlighted on the importance of conserving water resources by consciously cultivating individual and community habits to protect waterbodies from depletion. He stressed on the dangers of plastic pollution, and the ecological hazards of destroying catchment areas. He called for more plantation efforts and called for joint efforts of both the administration and the community in working towards the proposed conservation. He concluded by urging the people to practice sustainable farming and to protect catchment areas.
Earlier, C W R Sangma, BDO, Songsak C&RD Block, highlighted on the objective, and stressed on the need of community involvement in taking ownership of protecting and conserving waterbodies.
