Shillong, July 8: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday night allocated portfolios to ministers after inducting 36 new faces in the Council of Ministers in a major cabinet reshuffle and elevating 7 Ministers of State (MoS) to Cabinet Ministers.
All together 43 leaders took oath to office and secrecy on Wednesday evening, which included four leaders from the North East. The four new Union Ministers are: Kiren Rijiju from Arunachal Pradesh, Sarbananda Sonowal from Assam, Dr. R.K. Ranjan Singh from Manipur, and Pratima Bhowmik from Tripura. Each leader represents a state ruled by the BJP in the region.
Sonowal and Rijiju have been inducted as Cabinet Ministers while Dr. Singh and Bhowmik have been inducted as Ministers of State.
Former Assam Chief Minister, Sarbananda Sonowal has been allocated the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways; and Ministry of AYUSH.
Kiren Rijiju has been given Ministry of Law and Justice.
Dr. R.K. Ranjan Singh has been given the role of Minister of State in the Ministry of External Affairs; and Minister of State in the Ministry of Education.
Pratima Bhowmik has been made the Minister of State in the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment.
Meanwhile, Rameswar Teli, who was earlier the Minister of State for food processing, has now been tasked to work as MoS with Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas; and Ministry of Labour and Employment.
5 Union Ministers from North East
The current Council of Ministers headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has five representatives from the north eastern region. Earlier, there was a bit of confusion on the status of Teli when his name could not be found in the new list, just like many others who were retained in the current capacity.
The list of 43 inductees only contained the name of those that were either elevated into Cabinet Minister from MoS level or were new faces. It meant that Kiren Rijiju’s name featured because he had to resign as MoS of Sports and Youth Affairs to be re-inducted as a Cabinet Minister. Whereas Sonowal, Dr. Singh and Bhowmik were new faces.
As for Teli, he was retained as MoS but shifted to new departments.
Meanwhile, the region has five leaders in the Union Council of Ministers, the highest representation for the region since independence.
New Council of Ministers Structure
After the cabinet reshuffle on Wednesday, the Council of Ministers has swelled to 77.
Modi has appointed 30 Cabinet Ministers, 2 Ministers of State (Independent Charge), and 45 Ministers of State.
