South Garo Hills farmers learn about sustainable agricultural practices at Kharif Campaign 2024

Chokpot, July 1: The Kharif Campaign 2024, organized by CAU-KVK South Garo Hills, saw enthusiastic participation by 40 local farmers drawn from seven villages in the region, who were imparted knowledge on sustainable agricultural practices.

Held at the KVK South Garo Hills center in Dagalgopgre, the event was led by Dr. Athokpam Haribhushan, Principal Scientist and Head of KVK South Garo Hills. In his opening address, Dr. Haribhushan emphasized the importance of intensive cultivation during the Kharif season to ensure food and nutritional security. He encouraged farmers to adopt modern agricultural practices to boost productivity and sustainability.

Rike Chelchak A. Sangma, Subject Matter Specialist (SMS) in Agronomy, and Dr. Tanya R. Marak, SMS in Plant Protection, delivered insightful lectures during the campaign. Sangma focused on organic farming techniques for crops such as paddy, millets, and maize. Dr. Marak discussed plant protection measures tailored for Kharif crops, providing farmers with essential knowledge to safeguard their harvests.

The campaign also included the distribution of various seeds to the attending farmers. Semi-aromatic paddy, aromatic paddy, BHP-resistant paddy, foxtail millet, barnyard millet, and composite maize seeds were handed out, aiming to enhance crop diversity and resilience.
