Guwahati, Jan. 17: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) reported significant weather changes in response to a cyclonic storm originating in southern Bangladesh since Monday.
Cold winds, descending from about three kilometres above sea level towards the north-east, have ushered in winter conditions in Assam and several other northeastern states. According to IMD data over the last 24 hours, severe cold weather has gripped most parts of northeastern states, including Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, and Meghalaya.
“Several districts of Arunachal Pradesh have been covered with snow for the past few days. Even after nearly 37 years, some parts of Nagaland were reported to have received snow in the early hours of this morning,” said an official of IMD.
Even the lowest temperature in Meghalaya’s capital, Shillong, dropped to 3.0 degrees Celsius on Tuesday.
In the last 24 hours until this evening, light rains have occurred at isolated places in Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, and Meghalaya.
The IMD stated the sky will remain cloudy in several districts of Assam, including Guwahati, for the next three days. Light rain is likely to occur in some parts of the state.
Meanwhile, temperatures have dropped below normal in most parts of the state until this evening as the sky remains cloudy. Due to this, people are feeling more cold. Till evening, the minimum temperatures in some towns and cities of the state were as follows: Guwahati 11.0 degrees, Dibrugarh 11.4 degrees, Tezpur 13.5 degrees Celsius, Silchar 13.2 degrees, Dhubri 12.2 degrees, Jorhat 9.2 degrees, and North Lakhimpur 11.6 degrees Celsius.
The Regional Meteorological Centre (IMD) has issued a warning that from January 19, even though the weather is somewhat harsh, it will cover water bodies, wetlands, hilly areas, and adjoining open fields with thick fog cover from midnight until the east. Even the Regional Meteorological Centre has issued an early warning that most parts of the state, including Guwahati, will be covered with thick blankets of fog for the coming days.
“The weather has hindered the normal flight and landing of the aircraft. Today, due to the fog in the sky at Borjhar airport, the aircraft had to take off and land only after 9.30 am,” said an official.
