“They had time to raise issues about drying clothes on the railings; why not raise the issue of price rise”
Shillong, Sept 23: Meghalaya Assembly Speaker Thomas A. Sangma has questioned the Voice of the People Party (VPP) for choosing to address trivial issues, such as people drying clothes on railings in the Assembly, instead of raising more pressing concerns like the rising cost of essential goods.
Speaking on the matter, Sangma stated, “If they (VPP) choose to take issues to the streets instead of addressing them in the House, that’s their decision. They had time to raise issues about drying clothes on the railings; why not raise the issue of price rise?”
In response to VPP’s allegations that their MLAs were not given enough time to address the issue of price inflation during the autumn session, the Speaker refuted the claims, asserting that every member had the opportunity to voice their concerns. “All members are free to raise important issues, whether it’s a one, two, or three-day session. Time was allotted to every member, and it’s up to them to prioritize the matters they find most urgent,” he stressed.
The VPP, led by Nongkrem legislator Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit, recently staged a one-day sit-in protest at Malki ground in response to what they described as an unprecedented rise in essential commodity prices. The party also accused members of the ruling coalition of monopolizing the Assembly’s agenda and restricting opposition voices during the session, prompting their street protest. According to Basaiawmoit, the price hike is severely impacting the poor and marginalized communities in the state.
