Must read

Shillong, Dec 6: Shillong came alive with its first ever Spoken Festival, witnessing a literary and artistic celebration like never before at the scenic Ward’s Lake in Shillong on Friday.

The event brought together poets, storytellers, artists and musicians from across the country, turning the city into a vibrant hub of creativity and inspiration as the inaugural Spoken Festival got underway on Friday.

Writers, artistes from across the country lauded the exceptional experience they had at the first ever Spoken fest.

Talking to Hub News, the Festival Director, Roshan Abbas said that the objective in organising such an event is to bring together creative people of different fields from Shillong and to take their voices and make it heard everywhere.

“We don’t get to hear so much stories from here, we don’t really see the work of people here but Bombay (Mumbai) and other cities become more about itself… but I really think the work of the people here needs to be heard and seen more,” said Abbas.

He added that he will be taking poets from Meghalaya to the Spoken Fest in Mumbai next year.

Adding a local flavour to the event, Vancouver Shullai, a Khasi poet, recited a very intriguing evocative self-composed poem, named “Don Bosco Square”, which he narrated about life at Don Bosco Square along with others. Shullai’s narration vividly brought to life the experiences and essence of one of Shillong’s most iconic locations.

One attendee described it as an “eye-opener,” adding, “It’s a platform that encourages creativity and provides exposure to talents who otherwise may not have been discovered.”

As Shillong continues to establish itself as a cultural hotspot, the success of the Spoken Festival promises to be the beginning of many such enriching events in the region, blending the city’s unique charm with the universal language of art and storytelling.
