Guwahati, Dec 16: Assam is set to bolster its ties with Bhutan, fostering a more robust and dynamic partnership between the two neighboring regions. The visit by Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma marks a pivotal step in advancing diplomatic, cultural, and economic cooperation.

Dr. Sarma arrived in Bhutan today for a four-day official visit, spanning from December 16 to 19. This visit, his first to Bhutan since assuming office as Chief Minister, carries profound diplomatic and cultural significance. During his stay, Dr. Sarma is scheduled to meet with Bhutan’s King and Prime Minister, underscoring the importance of high-level dialogue in strengthening bilateral ties.

One of the highlights of Dr. Sarma’s itinerary is his participation in Bhutan’s 117th National Day celebration, a grand occasion that symbolizes the country’s unity, pride, and progress. His presence at this event reaffirms Assam’s commitment to fostering a closer bond with Bhutan, a relationship that extends beyond formal diplomacy to shared cultural values and traditions.

Upon arrival at Paro Airport, Dr. Sarma and his wife, Riniki Bhuyan Sharma, received a warm and ceremonious welcome. Bhutan’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and External Trade, Lyonpo D. N. Dhungyel, India’s Ambassador to Bhutan, Sudhakar Dalela, and Kesang Deki, Cabinet Secretary of the Royal Government of Bhutan, were among the dignitaries present to receive them.

The welcome ceremony was a vivid display of cultural exchange, as Bhutanese youth performed traditional dances alongside Assam’s iconic Bihu dance. This graceful blending of two distinct yet interconnected cultures underscored the shared heritage between Assam and Bhutan, reinforcing the spirit of friendship and goodwill.

“This visit is significant as it is the first visit to Bhutan by the Chief Minister of Assam. Bhutan and Assam share a warm, historical bond of friendship and neighbourly connection. This visit will further strengthen these ties, fostering even closer relations between Bhutan and the State of Assam in India” a statement from Ministry of Foreign Affairs and External Trade Royal Govt of Bhutan stated.

This visit is expected to pave the way for deeper cooperation in various sectors, including trade, tourism, and cultural exchange. Given Bhutan’s growing role as a regional partner, Assam’s strategic engagement with its neighbor aims to unlock new opportunities for economic growth and socio-cultural enrichment.
