Tura, March 27: The Super 5 NJY Memorial Cup 2025 Futsal Tournament officially kicked off on Thursday at the GBHSS Chandmari Football Turf in Tura, aiming to bring together football enthusiasts and young talents from across the region.
Organised by ICFAI University, Tura Campus, in collaboration with the District Football Association, Tura, and the District Sports Office, West Garo Hills, the tourney (spanning March 27-March 29) promises three days of thrilling futsal action.
The opening day featured 14 group-stage matches, with teams competing on adjacent courts simultaneously due to time constraints and numerous participating teams.
Each match adhered to standard futsal regulations, consisting of 30 minutes of play, divided into 15-minute halves with a 5-minute halftime, and five players per side.
Gracing the inaugural ceremony was Saljagring M Marak, District Sports Officer, West Garo Hills, Gamcheng R Marak, General Secretary, District Football Association, Dr. Alicia Gatphoh, Vice Chancellor, ICFAI and Dr. Viola Sonatchi B Sangma, Advisor cum Campus Incharge, ICFAI Tura.
Dr. Gatphoh, in her inaugural speech, emphasized the tournament’s significance in promoting athleticism and camaraderie among participants. She also encouraged participants to maintain good sportsmanship and to learn from the game’s challenges, both physically and mentally.
Saljagring M. Marak, District Sports Officer, then introduce the participating teams and outline the tournament’s rules, ensuring a fair and competitive environment.
The day’s matches produced some exciting results as Morning FC A dominated Volunteer FC with a 4-0 victory, Blitz Wolf narrowly defeated Brotherhood Senior 3-1, and Jong FC delivered a commanding 8-0 win against MBMA, Tura.
Jengjal FC overcame Genoa by 6-1, Rongkhon Sporting edged past IRA FC with a 3-1 victory, and Northern United triumphed over Mrong FC by 4-1. Evening FC C secured a decisive 6-1 win against NEHU strikers, and Youngster United defeated Morning FC B with a commanding 3-0 victory. DBC, Tura, won against Brothers United by 3-1.
The match between Dakopgre and Brotherhood Junior ended in a 3-3 draw, with Dakopgre winning the penalty shootout 1-0. Similarly, ICFAI, Tura, and Sunny Hills drew 2-2, with ICFAI, Tura, winning the penalty shootout by 3-2.
Friends United won against Tsunami by 3-0. Chandmary FC A won against Karaka FC 5-1, and Chandmary FC B won against Mason Phillips by 3-0.
With the group-stage matches over, the tournament progresses to the pre-quarterfinal stage on March 28, followed by the quarterfinals in the afternoon. The semifinals is scheduled to take place on March 29, leading to the grand finale at 3:00 PM the same day.
With a total of 30 teams vying for the championship, the tournament is expected to draw significant local support and provide a platform for showcasing the best of futsal in Tura.
