Shillong, March 9: A state-level conference aimed at empowering nurses in palliative care, organized by the CNE Cell of Supercare Hospital, commenced on friday at SICPAC/LARITI, Mawdiangdiang. The event was attended by over 600 delegates from across the state, including more than 400 delegates from the state’s periphery.
The conference was graced by esteemed guest Ms. Abanti Gopan, a distinguished nursing consultant renowned for her expertise in palliative care. Gopan, who is a strong proponent of Nurse Empowerment, has the unique distinction of being an accomplished Nurse Administrator and Educationist serving as an inspiration to many within the nursing community.
She highlighted on the existing deficit in palliative care awareness among the public and stressed the crucial role of spreading knowledge about palliative care. This initiative by Supercare Hospital coincided with International Women’s Day, reflecting the hospital’s dedication to promoting women’s influence in the nursing profession.
The turnout of The conference was positive as there was a large audience in attendance which indicates a strong interest and support for recognizing the power and influence of women in nursing.
Mary B Lyngdoh, the Nursing Superintendent of Supercare Hospital, reiterated the team’s commitment to educating more nurses on palliative care. With palliative care emerging as a specialized area within the nursing profession, this conference aimed to underscore the significance of disseminating knowledge, particularly in rural areas.
Jasmine Kharphuli, an observer at the event, praised the conference for providing valuable insights into palliative care, including strategies for assessing and managing common symptoms. She noted that such initiatives contribute significantly to enhancing nursing skills in palliative care.
A delegate noted that the conference’s focus on palliative care is crucial, given the rising number of cancer cases in the state and the limited facilities available.
Attendees said that the conference will help upgrade nurses’ knowledge and skills in palliative care, benefiting the state’s healthcare system.
The conference marked a significant step towards empowering nurses and fostering patient-centered care in palliative settings, emphasizing the importance of ongoing education and skill development.
