Shillong, Sept 10: The ‘Sur Ki Nong Mawlai’ (Voice of the people of Mawlai) on Friday staged a surprise ‘knife surrender’ protest in front of the Main Secretariat here in Shillong to mount pressure on the state government for the immediate suspension of the police officers involved in the firing incident that led to the killing of the former Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) leader Cherishterfield Thangkhiew.Several knives were surrendered at the entrance gate of the Secretariat by leaders and residents of Mawlai.

The protesters also displayed placards while shouting slogans “MDA government suspend immediately the three top cops (Director General of Police, SP, East Jaintia Hills and DSP Traffic Shillong).”

This comes when most of the officers and legislators were in the Meghalaya Assembly to attend the first day of the Autumn Session.
