Symposium sheds light on Garo Cultural Heritage in Tura

Tura, Sept 16: In an effort to delve into as well as propagate the knowledge on the richness of Garo cultural heritage, a symposium focused on the themes of Nokachik (architecture), Garments and Ornaments, and Deities was held on Friday.

The event, organized jointly by INTACH (Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage), the Department of English at North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) in Tura, and PRIME Meghalaya, was held at the PRIME HUB Conference Hall in Dakopgre, Tura. This was the second such symposium held in Tura, by the same organizers.

The symposium was attended by a diverse range of audience, including students from Don Bosco College in Tura to enrich themselves with the knowledge of Garo culture and heritage.

The speakers included Dr. Colnat B Marak, Dr. Dorothy R Marak, and Ms. Aprillin Dilchi A Sangma. Dr. Ramona Sangma, Associate Professor in the Department of English at NEHU, Tura, and co-convenor of INTACH Meghalaya Chapter, led the proceedings. The discussions encompassed various facets of Garo culture, including the intricate architecture known as Nokachik in which natural resources are used to make the buildings, traditional garments and ornaments worn by men and women of the tribe, and the different deities that were and are worshipped in the Garo culture.

Although initially intended to be bilingual, the event predominantly unfolded in the Garo language, owing to the majority Garo attendees, facilitating a more nuanced understanding of the subject matter. At the end of the symposium, the participants were provided with certificates of participation.

Speaking about the event to Hub News, Dr. Ramona Sangma expressed her satisfaction with the turnout, stating, “This time the response was very good, different people from different professions have joined in today. We had architects, government officers from the administrative department, entrepreneurs, students, and faculties from different colleges coming in today.”
