Due to rising Brahmaputra water levels, the Dibrugarh district administration has restricted Chhath Puja celebrations at two major river ghats—Mohanaghat and Kachari Ghat—where similar measures were implemented last year.
The Centre for Environment Protection and Rural Development (CEPARD), based in Garo Hills, has raised alarm over the increasing water levels of the Jinjiram and Brahmaputra rivers.
The flood waters have inundated 2800 villages under 105 revenue circles, affecting a staggering 3.86 lakh people who are now seeking shelter in 515 relief camps and distribution centers
Though the Brahmaputra water levels have slightly receded in parts of eastern Assam, Dibrugarh has been submerged under relentless floodwaters, causing untold distress to its residents.
The incident occurred when the labourers, belonging to L&T company, were engaged in bridge construction work at the site of Brahmaputra river in Fancy Bazar area.
