Sonowal visited the flood affected areas from Mohanaghat near Bogibeel upto Aithan to assess the damage caused by erosion and artificial floods. The recent floods and erosion have severely impacted daily life in Dibrugarh.
The floods situation in Dibrugarh improved marginally on Saturday with water level receding, reducing the affected population to 12,537 in 64 villages in the district.
The flood waters have submerged 2580 villages under 86 revenue circles. 157,000 people are still taking shelter in 365 relief camps and distribution centres.
It is noteworthy that the issue of artificial flooding in Rukminigaon and places in Guwahati city has multiple causes, including rapid encroachment along riverbanks, reducing the water-carrying capacity of rivers like the Bahini-Bharalu, an unscientific and inadequate drainage system unable to handle heavy rainfall, and clogged drains leading to water accumulation, to mention a few.
According to the revised order, the entry of commercial trucks are allowed from Numaligarh Tiniali from 7 am to 3 pm while the entry of commercial trucks from Panbari, Bokakhat and Bagori Border will be from 8 am to 4 om in regulated speed under piloting by police and forest staff.
