Cabinet Minister in-charge Food Civil Supplies & Consumers, Water Resources, Home (Civil Defense & Home Guards) and Cooperation, Comingone Ymbon, on Friday said he welcomes the decision to introduce railway lines in Jaintia Hills as it would benefit the people of the region.

He said cement factories are producing almost 17 million tonnes which means 3300 tons per day. This means almost 50 lakh tons (of cement) are being carried from Jaintia Hills to the rest of the country. Therefore, it is not possible to maintain the road and traffic in the future.
In a quick response, the Jaintia Students’ Union (JSU) has expressed strong opposition against the government’s move to introduce a railway line in the Jaintia Hills region.
