The 19-South Shillong Advisory Committee (SSAC) headed by BJP legislator Sanbor Shullai on Monday proposed 30 percent job reservation each for Khasi-Jaintia and Garo people while 27 percent for the Economically Weaker Section (EWS)
The All Khasi Hills Achik Federation (AKAF) on Tuesday submitted its suggestion to the Expert Committee on State Reservation Policy asserting the need to ensure status quo is maintained on the issue.
Currently, the state job reservation policy provides reservation of 40 percent for Khasis-Jaintia, 40 percent for Garos, 5 percent for other tribes and 15 percent general category.
"We are in the process of searching members who are willing to head or be members of such a committee. The process has started and we need to give the search committee its own time so that we do things in the correct way and correct manner," Lyngdoh told reporters.
In a memorandum submitted to the Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, the forum said, “We would earnestly request you to kindly consider and give 15% quota, as and when the existing Reservation Policy is reviewed, to the Indigenous Minority Tribes of Meghalaya specifically for- Hajongs, Koches, Rabhas, Boro-Kacharies and Manns and give them a scope to grow and come at par with the Khasis, Garos and Jaintias.”
