India's kidney transplant scenario presents a stark contrast between supply and demand. According to the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (NOTTO), a mere 6,000 kidney transplants are carried out annually, despite a staggering 2 lakh patients awaiting the lifesaving procedure.
Affordable healthcare is becoming increasingly vital in India, particularly in smaller cities where infrastructure and medical expertise are often limited.
The intricate six-and-a-half-hour surgery took place at the main referral hospital, AGMC and GBP Hospital at Agartala, in collaboration with Shija Hospital from Imphal which has successfully completed 114 kidney transplants to date.
