Continuous heavy rainfall over the past three days has triggered multiple landslides across various parts of Sikkim, disrupting daily life and road connectivity. Meanwhile, India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for the state, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall over the next two days.
Six bodies have been retrieved on Wednesday afternoon from the debris of a massive landslide that occured on Tuesday night in Pherima along NH-29 between capital Kohima and Dimapur.
Heavy downpour in the Garo Hills region led to a landslide at Spring Hills in Tura on Tuesday afternoon, bringing the traffic on the crucial road to a halt for few hours.
According to information received, the landslide struck the power station in Balutar, Sikkim around 7:30 am at the dam site. The area reported several minor landslides in the past few days and therefore most of the residents were evacuated from the site.
Several towns in the Kurung Kumey districts including Sarli, Polosang, Paniasang, Damin, and Parsi Parlo have been completely cut off due to heavy landslides in Arunachal Pradesh.
The accident happened at around 8 AM on Wednesday morning due to the heavy rain, where a portion of the retaining wall collapsed onto the shop below, completely destroying it.
