Hours after Union Minister RK Ranjan Singh's house was set on fire on Thursday night by miscreants, now tension continues to grip Manipur's Imphal East.
The statement read, "We are deeply concerned about the continuing ethnic violence in Manipur between the Meitei community and the tribal Kuki and Zo communities. We demand an immediate halt to this violence that is causing large scale disruption of lives, livelihoods and properties and unleashing even more terror among people".
According to reports, the incident is said to have occurred at around 11:00 p.m. on Thursday night, after a huge mob of miscreants stormed R K Ranjan Singh's residential gate.
As ethnic violence continues to grip Manipur, 15 prominent organizations representing various communities have come together to submit a joint memorandum to the United Nations and several international agencies. Their plea seeks urgent international attention and intervention to bring an end to the escalating crisis in the northeastern state.
The Manipur government has extended the suspension of Internet services for the ninth time until June 20, 2023, amidst sporadic incidents of violence. The decision aims to prevent the spread of rumours, videos, photos, and messages that could potentially disrupt law and order in the region.
The Manipur Tribal Forum have sought protection via the Indian Army through an Interlocutory Application (IA) filed in the Supreme Court, saying that it cannot rely on the “empty assurances” of the Union of India as both the Centre and the State government “have embarked jointly on a communal agenda for ethnic cleansing” of the Kukis.
