In response to incidents of pressure groups checking undocumented migrant workers, UDP’s Nongpoh legislator, Mayralborn Syiem, has called for the urgent implementation of an Inner Line Permit (ILP) in Meghalaya. Syiem emphasized that the ILP is essential for regulating the entry and exit of individuals and ensuring proper record-keeping.
Addressing the media after a cabinet meeting, Sangma first clarified there is “no work permit” in the state for migrant workers, but there is a “mandatory registration” of such workers with the Labour department.
Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong on Friday informed that the State government will next week meet to discuss the queries of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) with regards to the Meghalaya Residents, Safety and Security (Amendment) Bill, 2020.
He said the state government had assured setting up of an entry point at Umling in Ri Bhoi District to check illegal influx entering the state but ironically “the said entry point is now being turned into a Covid testing centre”.
