Out of the 19 sitting Members of District Council (MDCs) who contested the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) elections, only four have managed to retain their seats, while the remaining 15 including key leaders, faced defeat.
Chief of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) Pyniaid Sing Syiem on Tuesday demanded review of the existing electoral roll for the upcoming ADC elections, following the detection of the names of non-tribal voters.
Chief of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) Pyniaid Sing Syiem on Monday predicted that the Voice of the People Party (VPP) will lose miserably especially from the constituencies of its four MLAs in the February 21-ADC elections because people have learned their lessons well.
While tabling the resolution, KHADC chief Pyniaid Sing Syiem said, “The proposed amendment to the Meghalaya State Investment Promotion and Facilitation Act, 2024 which allow the IMA to purchase land and allot to the Investor will come into conflict with several provision of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District (Regulation and Administration of Land) Act, 2021 and will affect the sentiments of the general public at large.”
The Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) has decided to aggressively pursue with the state government to urge the Centre to amend the Constitution (Scheduled Tribes) Order, 1950 for recognizing only the local indigenous tribes as Scheduled Tribes (ST) in Meghalaya.
