The Expert Committee set up to review the State Reservation Policy have been advised to maintain status quo by the central executive committee of the Garo Students Union as they cited the continued marginalization of the Garo community which had even compelled the Meghalaya High Court to intervene and order the state government to activate the roster system in job employment, after a gap of 52 long years.
The opposition Voice of the People Party (VPP) has suggested that the percentage of reservation for Khasi-Jaintia, Garos, Scheduled Castes and other tribes should be based in terms of their population as per the 1971 census, it asserted the need is to recognize Khasi-Jaintias as one community.
The Expert Committee on the State Reservation Policy has decided to issue a public notice to seek consultations, suggestions and comments from stakeholders on the State Reservation Policy.
The Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP) on Friday decided to soon submit its suggestions to the state government for reviewing the state reservation policy.
However, the eight observations are kept “confidential” till the time they are presented before the Expert Committee – constituted by the government to review the job reservation policy – for its examination.
